We do not grieve

We do not grieve

our loss today

but rather grieve

what cannot be

tomorrow.

Before today,

although separated

by time, distance, memory,

we always knew

the potential

held by tomorrow.

And now that is lost.

We grieve today

holding the past

close to our heart

imagining only

what should have been,

what could have been,

what might have been

What we have forever

is what we have today.

And of that

we can choose

joy or sorrow,

hope or dismay,

God’s love

or not.
