Broken memories

I wrote this after spending some time with my father who was in that terrible stage of Alzheimer’s where he knew he didn’t know, memories on the tip of his tongue but never there.

Still shards

Silvered splinters
Silently shimmering
Fractured fragments
All true reflections
Of a life, lived, lost
The picture complete
The puzzle apart
Shattered, shuttered
Frustrated
Beseeching
Fingers desperately clawing
As gravity relentless
Pulls memories over the cliff
Into a hopeless chasm
Of emptiness.
