The humility of science

As a scientist and hopefully a Christian it has always bothered me that science is often cast as the villain threatening belief and dogma when perhaps more deservedly an ongoing attempt to reveal the astoundingly complex beauty of creation.

The humility of science

Testing, forever testing

Knowing what is known

Is only known ‘til disproven

Certain only

That facts change

That even natural laws

Are bounded

In time and by space

And open

to interpretation

And the quest always

To find patterns in facts

To accumulate,

To allow understanding

The arrogance of religion

Certain, forever certain

Knowing what is known

Is true for eternity

And that what is known

To be true will remain so.

That even natural laws

Are subject

to forces unseen

And the quest always

To fit facts to that truth

Deepening understanding

Through interpretation

The simplicity of love.

Love your enemy as yourself,

Do unto others as you would have done to you

Love one another as I have loved you

As much as you do to the least

Lay down your life

Be still and know

Accept the gift of peace

Understanding you are loved.
